St. George Catholic School’s Grade 5 and 6 students achieved a remarkable feat by winning the Minecraft Provincial eSports Championship in 2023. The OCSB community is proud of their incredible victory! The St. George eSports Team competed against 25 other teams from across Ontario at the Microsoft headquarters located in downtown Toronto. The competition involved creating four Minecraft builds, which the team worked together to complete.
The St. George School team was fortunate to have the guidance and mentorship of Calum MacKenzie, an educator at St. George’s. With a passion for Minecraft that began five years ago, Calum has been overseeing an engaging Minecraft club during lunch recess. His belief that play can enhance learning outcomes has inspired greater student engagement and creativity. The Minecraft competition was a crowning achievement for students and educators. It was a valuable opportunity to teach teamwork, collaboration, and effective communication. Calum’s leadership and dedication to his students will undoubtedly lead to future opportunities to learn and grow.
At the OCSB, Deep Learning is given significant attention. It is applied in eSports where creativity and collaboration are crucial in achieving success. This experience has taught students the importance of effective teamwork and how it can help them achieve their goals. The hard work of the St. George eSports Team secured them a spot in the finals, but it was their teamwork that ultimately led them to become the tournament champions. Faelen, a Grade 6 student on the team, believes that effective communication and the exchange of ideas among team members are the keys to their success.
How did the team celebrate their hard-earned victory? With pizza, of course!
