The Black Student Forum is a student-led event that provides a platform for black students to share their experiences and ideas while educating staff about the challenges faced by black students in our community. The forum aims to create a safe space for black students to discuss how their life experiences affect their academic success and well-being. Connecting with students from other schools also aims to build a sense of community across the board.
The Black Student Forum was held in person for the first time in its four-year history during the 2022-2023 school year, providing students with the opportunity to come together as a community and share their experiences. The in-person event allowed them to interact and connect personally, fostering a deeper connection and understanding.
Attendees were left feeling energized and enthusiastic by the positive, contagious atmosphere. During the event, the Kamengo Cultural Troupe delivered an electrifying performance that added to the day’s excitement. The exchange of ideas and shared experiences created a real buzz amongst everyone who participated. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and celebrate the achievements of the black community.
Students also took part in presentations about Peer Mentorship, Mental Health, and Black Joy. Towards the end of the event, there was a musical performance by Melody Berhane from Immaculata High School. The event concluded with a speech from the Director of Education, Tom D’Amico, and a keynote presentation by Chuks Imahiagbe from the OCSB’s Black Educators Network.
